As we bid farewell to 2024, we at En Aawa Trees Foundation are filled with immense pride and gratitude for the incredible milestones we've achieved this year. Our journey has been marked by significant accomplishments, community collaboration, and a strengthened commitment to combating desertification in Nigeria.
Here are some of the highlights that made 2024 an unforgettable year for us:
Surpassing Our Tree Planting Target
Between April and September, with the incredible support of community members, we planted 2,206 trees across 21 communities, surpassing our initial target of 2,000 trees. This achievement is a testament to the power of collective effort and the dedication of everyone involved. Each tree planted brings us closer to a greener, more sustainable future.
Earning UNCCD Accreditation
This year marked a historic milestone as we received accreditation from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). This recognition grants En Aawa Trees Foundation permanent observer status by the UNCCD, which affirms the credibility of our efforts and grants us access to influential platforms to engage with global stakeholders. It is a testament to our commitment to creating lasting solutions to desertification and land degradation challenges.
Celebrating World Tree Day
To honour World Tree Day, we launched a national photography competition, inviting young talents to capture the essence of trees in our lives. The entries were awe-inspiring, reflecting the critical role of trees in sustaining life and the environment. Aisha Hamas emerged as the winner with a compelling photograph that beautifully demonstrates trees as symbols of survival and growth.
A Heartfelt Collaboration
A generous and creative contribution from REDVERTEX brought our mission to life through a profoundly moving video. The short film captures the essence of our work, showcasing the impact of our initiatives and our aspirations for the future. We are deeply thankful for REDVERTEX's support in amplifying our message to a broader audience.
Showcasing at COP16 Riyadh
The year reached its pinnacle with our active participation in the UNCCD COP16 held in Riyadh, the largest convention dedicated to addressing land degradation. Our booth attracted visitors from around the world, providing a platform to share our experiences and learn from diverse perspectives. Additionally, we were privileged to participate in panels alongside organisations such as UNDP, the Saudi Green Building Forum, Riyadh Global Shapers, and the PSU Centre for Sustainability and Climate. These discussions were instrumental in shaping our future strategies.
Looking Ahead to 2025!
We aim to amplify our impact as we set our sights on 2025. Our goal is to plant 10,000 trees, establish strategic partnerships, and scale our initiatives to new heights. We remain steadfast in our mission to combat desertification and foster sustainable environmental practices. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported us throughout this journey. Together, we are creating a legacy of resilience and sustainability for future generations.
