Our Nigerian Tree Planting Season Begins!

Dear friends,

Today, June 17th, as the world comes together to mark the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, we are proud to announce the launch of our 2025 Tree Planting Season.

This annual day of reflection and action holds deep significance for us. It serves as a reminder of the critical need to protect our land and support the communities that live closest to it. As a UNCCD-accredited organisation operating across the Sahel, we have witnessed firsthand how desertification is not only drying up landscapes but also threatening lives, livelihoods, and the future of entire generations. Land restoration is a matter of life and death; we must act now before it is too late.

Building on the support and encouragement of our partners, we are scaling up our efforts.

This year, we plan to plant 10,000 trees across Adamawa, Gombe, and Yobe States of Nigeria as part of our commitment to restoring degraded land and building climate resilience. These trees will serve as anchors of life, restoring soil health, cooling local microclimates, creating biodiversity habitats, and supporting sustainable livelihoods.

But planting trees is only part of the solution. We need a comprehensive approach to create a virtuous cycle of sustainable development.

As we enter the 2025 season, we will also prioritise the protection and care of existing trees. Too many trees are lost each year to neglect and unregulated development. Through a combination of community-based monitoring, local stewardship programs, and public education, we aim to ensure that the trees already rooted in our soil not only survive but also thrive. Every tree protected is a step closer to reversing the damage of desertification.

In parallel, we will be conducting a series of awareness campaigns and educational outreach events designed to shed light on the scale, complexity, and urgency of this issue. These efforts will bring together farmers, schools, community leaders, and young people to inspire a deeper sense of environmental responsibility and shared action.

So today, we invite you, our friends, to help us in the endeavour. Whether you choose to plant a tree, protect one, or share our message, your involvement is vital. Let’s stand together to Save our Land, revive communities, and reimagine a more pleasant future for Nigeria and beyond.
